Taken from the "Phantom of the Paradise" soundtrack (Canadian pressing, A&M SP-3653) Here are two songs from a great cult classic movie from 1974 starring William Finley, Jessica Harper, and Paul Williams. The soundtrack was scored by Paul Williams, and the movie was written/directed by Brian de Palma. Surprisingly, the film gained a cult following in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada where it stayed in local cinemas for over four months continuously and for more than one year after that. There, the soundtrack sold about 20000 copies alone, and it achieved Gold status in Canada. The movie still remains a Halloween classic with Willaims' versions of many of the tunes performed in his own unique style! In this film, a struggling composer named Winslow Leach has his music stolen by Swan, a big-name record producer who runs his own label named Death Records. In a plot that combines elements from Phantom of the Opera and Dr. Faustus, Leach finds himself in a contract with the devil (namely Swan), and the frightening events unfold from this. Along the way, one iconic moment in the movie is when Leach gets his face stuck in a record press while trying to stop Swan from stealing his music. The result is disfiguring, and he is left to wear a phantom-wear mask and speak using a synthesized voice for the rest of the movie.
